- What is Done During a Complete Pelvic Exam?
-

-
- QUESTION: I am a 26 year old, shy, married woman. I think I have a minor
- female problem for which my doctor has advised a complete pelvic exam. I am
- too embarrassed to ask anyone else, so could you please tell what all the
- doctor will be doing during the exam? What instruments will he use, if any,
- and will it be painful? Thank you for your help.
-

-
- ANSWER: I am happy to outline the procedure to you. To start with, you will
- most certainly have the comfort and reassuring presence of a female nurse
- during the examination, for few physicians conduct this examination without
- such assistance. While the position on the table may not be the most
- comfortable it is certainly not painful, and is one which allows the
- examination to be conducted rapidly and yet provide the information about your
- condition that your doctor is seeking. First there is an external
- examination, mostly a visual examination. Using a lubricant on the gloved
- examining hand, the internal examination is performed. With one hand on your
- abdomen, and the other in the vagina, the physician may determine the status
- of your uterus, and the presence of abnormal masses. Then a "speculum" is
- inserted that holds the walls of the vagina open, permitting the physician to
- examine the cervix and obtain cells for the all important Pap Smear. While at
- times it may be uncomfortable, it is never painful, and with a little
- distracting conversation, is over in no time. This is truly an important
- examination, and you are well advised to proceed.
